O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She was raised in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School, graduating in 1981. The model was featured in several commercials prior to making the move into Los Angeles in 1986. Her career O'Grady started her career as models for Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She began her career on the screen with the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a recurring lead in ABC drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest and appeared on independent movies and television shows. Donna Abandando played her first principal role on ABC's NYPD Blue the police drama. O'Grady was the big-haired secretary from 1993 to 1996 received Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actor.
